Round Area Rugs Information

First I guess we should address the question of why in the world would there be a website devoted only to round area rugs? The answer is that there are a lot of people searching specifically not for just area rugs, but for round area rugs.

Take a look in any magazines showing home decorating or decor and you will undoubtedly see a lot of area rugs, and specifically round area rugs, used in the room decor shown. In almost every case, a rooms look can be improved with the addition of an area rug. Then we can move outside and see that if you have a patio, there may be an opportunity for you to improve the looks of that area too with the addition of an area rug.

What can an area rug do for your home? Just about anything! Area rugs are interior design necessities, as they can define, decorate, complement and emphasize room design and furniture. Take a look at any interior design magazine or decorator’s portfolio – nearly 90% of the rooms use area rugs to pull together the decor.

There are lots of variety available in area rugs but the most important thing you should keep in mind is the size. For example, if you are looking for a rug for a room that is essentially square then a round area rug may be just what you need. A good rule of thumb is that the rug should be about one foot from each wall, so the overall width of the rug should be about two feet shorter than the room. Even if the room is not square, the ’2 foot’ rule is a good one for shapes other than round too.

Next we will address the misconception that area rugs can only be used over wood flooring. Nothing could be further from the truth. An area rug can look fantastic over carpet. Again, take a look in the home decor magazines and you will see what we mean (and maybe get an idea or two in the process).

Round Area Rugs for Protection

Some people use area rugs to protect their wall to wall carpeting or to protect their hardwood floors. The size of the rug you choose will have the most impact on the overall look of the room. If the room is large with only a single sitting area, then a large area rug is most likely what will look best. On the other a room with multiple sitting areas might look best with one or two smaller area rugs.

When using area rugs in this manner another good rule to remember is that the the edge of the rug should not extend more than about two feet beyond the edge of the furniture and the legs of the furniture should be on the area rug.

Area rugs and specifically round area rugs are great accent pieces in the bedroom too. They can help draw the eye to the focal point of the bedroom. Which for most people is the bed itself. The edge of the area rug should extend about 3 feet on either side of the bed. Anything less will make the rug look too small for the area. Instead of round area rugs, you may want to consider rug runners for the sides, and possibly the end of the bed.

Obviously, round rugs are usually not used in a hallway and runners are used instead. Although if you just want to accent the beginning or end of a hallway a small round area rug may be the perfect accent piece.

Probably the most popular place area rugs are used is in the dining room. And the biggest mistake people make is in buying an area rug that is too small. If you are placing the rug under the dining room table (as most people do) then be sure to buy a rug that allows the chairs to set in the rug too. A round area rug will work as long as you are only placing one chair in each side and the legs of the chairs are on the area rug. For long rectangular shaped tables with more than one chair in the sides, a rectangular area rug is probably the best bet. Just keep in mind that the chair legs should be on the rug then too.

When looking to buy a round rug, the types, sizes, materials, patterns and colors available in round area rugs are so vast you should have an idea before beginning your search.
